The idea of the Food Pharmacy originated from work already being done by ProMedica in Toledo. In essence, patients who identify as having food insecurity and/or have special dietary needs can visit the Food Pharmacy with a “prescription” from the physician for fresh and healthy food. MCOP will offer fresh and healthy options on-site when patients visit.

In August 2016, Monroe County Opportunity Program (MCOP) was awarded funding through the Healthy Food Connect Initiative introduced by the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. The overall purpose of MCOP’s grant is to expand access to fresh and healthy food for low-income Monroe County residents. The first component of this grant to be rolled out is the introduction of the first Food Pharmacy in Monroe County.

MCOP is working in partnership with Family Medical Center (FMC) of Michigan to open a Food Pharmacy at the FMC location in Temperance, 8765 Lewis Avenue.

The Monroe location of the Family Medical Center is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays at 905 N. Macomb St., Monroe, MI 48162. Clients have to be a Family Medical Center patient to access services.

The Temperance location of the Family Medical Center is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays at 8765 Lewis Ave., Temperance, MI 48182. Clients have to be a Family Medical Center patient to access services.
