Housing Rehabilitation & Development

The Community Development Block Grant Program is responsible for bringing homeowner occupied homes up to Housing Quality Standard Codes.

The Property Improvement Program provides low-interest loans to homeowners and loanlords.

Rental Rehabilitation brings rental units up to code so landlords can provide safe, affordable housing for income qualified tenants.

Acquisition Development and Resale Program provides homes to qualified first-time homebuyers by purchasing property and constructing new houses or rehabilitating existing structures.

The Replacement Housing Program is available for homeowners who require excessive improvement to meet code standards.

Weatherization & Energy Assistance

The Energy Conservation Department offers help to low-income Monroe County residents with:
  • Utility Assistance
  • Energy Education
  • Weatherization Services
The weatherization assistance is a state and federally-funded home energy conservation program providing FREE measures to a home.

Families receiving weatherization services can expect heating costs to be reduced 20-25%, amounting to about $300 savings per year.

Tips, incentives, and energy savings kits are distributed at each energy class to assist in lowering energy expenses.

Transportation

Medical Transportation. Reliable, Comfortable and Convenient.

MCOP’s Specialized Transportation Department realizes the importance of having reliable, comfortable and convenient transportation available when you need it.  We understand how vital your transportation needs are in order to have a successful and timely recovery.  In order to make sure your needs are met our program coordinator will work with you to ensure medical visits are kept on time, regardless of special needs, distance of travel, or unique circumstances.

We use the following types of transportation

  • Wheel chair van transportation
  • Passenger vans for ambulatory patients

Service’s provided

  • To Medical Appointments and Other Non-Emergency Transportation
  • Vans Equipped with wheelchair lifts, seating for 6-10 passengers
  • Service is available Monday through Friday (and some Saturdays) throughout Southeastern Michigan, as well as Toledo

Licensed and trained

All drivers are licensed and trained specifically to handle the special challenges associated with transporting our customers.  Customer comfort remains a primary concern throughout the transportation process, and customers experience less stress while leaving familiar surroundings.

Home Chore

The Home Chore Department assists those age 60+ with home maintenance tasks that include:
  • lawn mowing
  • cleaning gutter
  • minor carpentry
  • shoveling snow
  • minor electrical and plumbing repairs
  • installing storm windows and air conditioners
All to improve safety in and outside of their home.

Home Care

The Home Care Department assists eligible Monroe County residents with daily routines such as homemaking and personal care tasks so that clients may remain living independently in their own homes. Respite care is also available for care givers.

Resource Advocacy

The Resource Advocacy Department links seniors with services and benefits for which they may qualify. Home visits are scheduled to assess the appropriate community involvement including:
  • Community Resource Handbook
  • Save a Life Program
  • Elderly Prescription Insurance Coverage (EPIC) Center
  • Tax Credits
  • Medicaid/Medicare Applications
  • Senior Prescription Assistance Program
  • Senior Fuel and Unmet Emergency Needs Program
  • Home Injury Control (HIC) including wheelchair ramps, bathroom chair and grab bars, bathtub rails, toilet seat risers and rails, smoke alarms, hand-held showers, safe lighting, and non-skid surfacing.

Emergency Services

Food:
  • The Monroe County Food Bank supports the 11 local food closets in Monroe County through food donations. The food closets provide food assistance packages on a regular basis to eligible residents.
  • The Monroe County Food Bank provides Emergency Food Boxes through M.C.O.P. to eligible residents in need.
  • The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) provides monthly food assistance to eligible seniors and families with children less than 6 years of age who are not already enrolled in the Women Infant Children program (WIC).
  • The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) provides food packages to eligible Monroe County residents and their families once every 3 months.
